The Steps to Effective Journiling

Journaling is one of the most helpful ways for an individual to express their emotions, feelings and internal thoughts about their daily life. It can be used to help identify individual patterns or behaviors that can be constructive or destructive in ones life. It is also a great way to relieve the stress and frustrations that one experiences on a daily basis. Many individuals who journal will tell you, that it helps them develop gratitude for the many blessings they already have in their life.

  1. The first step to effective journaling is to be sure to have as much detail as possible.
It is many times helpful to write a two way conversation with yourself, writing back and forth about the different views you have on the things you are journaling about.
  2. In the first column enter the date of which you are journaling.
  3. In the second column write the incident that you are journaling about, in as much detail as possible.
  4. Make a third column and list your beliefs about what happened and why.
  5. Make a final column and write down all of the feelings associated with what happened and how you behaved.
  6. Then re-write the same incident and challenge your own beliefs, feelings and behaviors , putting in new ones that would allow you to change what happened to you in a more healthy and productive way.

Taking time to journal in this format on a daily basis will help you create new tools to prevent self sabotage from continuing to occur in your life.
